Studies in graphic Design

A post on facebook today from psd tuts+ is well worth looking at. It’s a look at photoshop manipulated movie posters. But many/most of these would also make brilliant book covers.

Look them over. Study them closely. Look at the way the artists have used the typefaces to offset the graphics or, in some cases, have made the graphics so mindblowing that almost nothing else is needed (X-Men 3), featured header for this post.

I particularly like the dramatic graphic treatment of Walk the Line.

The Watchman is completely different. Look at how well the yellow text shows against the blue background and how the title, bottom justified, stands out yet still lets the graphic shine.

This blog is from 2009. I just went to see War Horse yesterday and was struck by the beauty of the heavily photoshopped poster. Though I can tell this poster has had a lot of work, the end result is a gorgeous whole.
