Welcome to BCB!

I am very excited to announce the start of my blog specifically dedicated to book cover art and design. Of course I’m also totally worn out from fighting with the WordPress template for over 9 hours! I knew what I wanted, I actually paid for the stupid template, and it wouldn’t give me exactly what I needed, so I’ve been cussing it heartily! And getting lots of satisfaction from saying nasty things about it on the template page too.

But it’s up, it’s going.

So who am I, and what is this blog about? Well see the “About BCB” link at the top of the page for more detailed information, but basically, I wanted to provide a place where authors and artists could get together, with the end goal of helping authors (especially indie authors) get the best cover possible for their work. A collaborative community with mutual benefit as it were.

To get things very clear right off the bat yes, I do cover design. And of course it would be nice if I got some jobs courtesy of this blog. However, my primary intent is to help all of us; authors and artists. I will be listing other cover designers and artists, links to good sites, and more.

Authors, my primary goal is to help you. I am going to be writing some tips and tricks and how-tos which I hope will help you get on the road to a good cover, or give you some basis to know what is and is not good design. A good book is worth a good cover, and a bad cover will absolutely impact your sales—downward. A good eye for design is seldom innate, it’s a skill to be developed.

Artists and designers, listing is free. But I am screening submissions. There is no guarantee of a listing and I am not going to link every artist/designer who asks. It is my goal to have a roster of talent listed here which is truly above the norm. I’m sure some will disagree with who I agree to list and who I do not. It’s my toybox! I get to decide what toys to put in.

I’m also going to offer critique on already created covers should anyone care to submit them. And of course, comments are welcome as well; I’m not the only talented person out there by a long shot and this place will be a lot more fun with active dialog and even a disagreement or two.

One thing this blog is not about is actually advertising individual books. It’s a cover design site whose goal is to help you put together a cover that will increase sales. It’s not a place for you to directly market your book, and as such I honestly don’t care how good (or not good) the book is. This is about the outside that helps your book be appealing enough for someone to want further. That is all.

So welcome all! I am always open to new ideas, so if you think there’s another way to help both artists and authors, email me!

Way to go Robin, I look forward to reading this website. I have followed your comments on the “Cover Art Review” site and look forward to your insight.

Hi Robin– Found you via my thread at Kindleboards. Great idea! I am an author, most definitely not a bookcover artist. Saying that, I have been “designing” my own covers this year (if using stock pics and throwing words on top can be called designing.) More and more I am convinced that in Indie publishing–books are judged by their covers! Your book may be great, but if the cover is not, it will be ignored. For my next book, I’ll definitely be paying someone for a cover. I look forward to trolling this site and hopefully finding someone who would be a good match for my work.
    Thanks–Dana Taylor
